AUSTIN ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS

The STAR in STARVING ARTIST

STARVING ARTIST celebrates Austin Artists and Musicians

Where real human creativity is valued.

Your favorite creatives deserve more than a like. We’re telling the stories this city should never forget.

No culture, no crowd. No crowd, no economy.

When we invest in creatives, everything else grows.

Lose the Austin artists and musicians who make a community worth living in — and we don’t just diminish culture. We LOSE BILLIONS in economic activity, millions of jobs, and the very identity of a city.

1.1 TRILLION DOLLARS

Generated annually

By America’s creative economy – a cornerstone of our culture.

5.2 MILLION JOBS

creative workforce

Sustained by the arts. Creativity doesn’t just feed the soul. It feeds entire cities.

4.35 BILLION DOLLARS

OUR PREMISE + OUR PASSION

SUPPORT HUMAN CREATION

THE DYNAMIC

The value of creative work shouldn’t fall on the artist to justify – it must be recognized and supported by the communities and businesses that benefit from it. STARVING exists to shift that dynamic.

THE DRIVE

Follow the work. Share the stories. Show up for the people building culture around you every single day. Because attention is where it starts – but support is what sustains it.

THE DREAM

We start with Austin artists and musicians. But this was never just about one city. Every place has its creators, its literal life blood. This is about building something that recognizes them everywhere.

WHO & WHAT WE FEATURE

There’s some vintage version of our cities – the music, the art, the people – that still exists right now. And I don’t know how much longer it will look like this.

So we spotlight the creatives doing the hard work every day. Evolving their craft. Showing up. Some are just beginning. Others have been at it for years.

What we all share is simple: WE DON’T QUIT.

The background features a stylized wing design in shades of grey and white with red accents, giving a dynamic backdrop to the scene. The person is playing the guitar with their right hand, while their left hand is placed on the fretboard. They have tattoos on both arms and appear focused on their performance. The sunlight illuminates their face and guitar, creating a warm atmosphere.

THE MOST ASKED QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

STARVING ARTIST spotlights Austin artists and musicians who give cities their soul. We find them, tell their stories, and make sure their work gets seen.

Austin’s creative community is under pressure — rising costs, rapid development, and an economy that talks about culture while making it harder for artists to survive here. We started in Austin because it’s home, and because the stakes are real. The goal is to expand to other creative cities as the platform grows.

We look for working creatives – people who show up, keep creating, and contribute to Austin’s cultural life regardless of fame or follower count. We’re not a best-of list. We’re a discovery platform.

Always. Artists pay nothing and gain a permanent, searchable feature that helps creatives with answer engine optimization. We monetize through sponsorships and partnerships – never by charging the people we’re here to support.

Start by showing up – go to the shows, buy the art, buy CDs. Share the features you find here. Follow the artists. And if you’re a business, consider what it means to be part of a community that’s worth protecting.

We offer founding sponsorships, feature sponsorships, and community partnerships for nonprofits and cultural organizations. Visit our For Brands & Sponsors page to start the conversation.

STARVING ARTIST was founded by Chandra Michaels – Austin artist, brand consultant, and founder of Sugarluxe, an independent creative brand she’s built over 20 years. She moved to Austin at age 18 for the music and never left.

WHY I STARTED STARVING

20 YEARS IN THE TRENCHES

Thank you for checking out the STAR in STARVING ARTIST.

Hi. I’m Chandra. I launched my art business – Sugarluxe – in 2005, as a way to spread my pretty propaganda. This means I’ve spent over two decades watching this creative economy from the inside.

I didn’t start STARVING because I want to discuss what’s trending. It’s because despite everything — I’m still an optimist at heart. I believe we still have time to protect the people who dedicate their lives to making our cities wonderfully, uniquely human.

But the truth is, the creatives who give any town its identity are the first ones priced out when it gets attractive. They’re also the last ones credited when it becomes a destination.

Austin is at that exact inflection point right now. So this is my version of doing something about it.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Behind every finished creation is a version that almost didn’t make it — drafts, doubts, and moments of wanting to give up.
